History

The Aberlour distillery was founded in 1826 by James Gordon and Peter Weir. After a big fire in 1878, the distillery burned down almost completely and was not rebuilt.

James Fleming then built in 1879 a new distillery in Aberlour, near the River Lour which flows there in place in the Spey. The St. Dorsdan's spring located there contributed significantly to the choice of the new location. To this day, Aberlour gets its water from this source.

Aberlour was sold in 1892 to the family business Robert Throne & Sons Ltd. Only a few years later - in 1898 - the distillery again fell victim to a major fire. Not only were the buildings destroyed, but nearly all of the warehouse was destroyed as well. The distillery was hit by fires several times in the course of the following decades, but it was constantly rebuilt.

After several changes of ownership between the years 1921 and 1974, the Aberlour distillery was taken over in 1975 by the Pernod Ricard Group, whose Scottish subsidiary Chivas Brothers Ltd has since been responsible for the management.
