History
At the mouth of the River Avon in the Spey River, John Smith, who had already leased the Glenfarcla distillery at the time, leased a piece of land. He wanted to fulfill his dream of having his own whiskey distillery for some time. The construction of the Cragganmore Distillery began in 1969, where he immediately laid a siding from the nearby railway line Strathspey Railway to the distillery.
When John died in 1886, his son Gordon was only 14 years old and could not yet succeed him. In the meantime, John's brother George took care of the distillery until George, at the age of 21, was old enough to take over.
After Gordon Smith died in 1912, his widow Mary Jane sold the distillery to the newly established Cragganmore Distillery Co. in 1923. In 1927, the DCL purchased the first 50 percent stake in White Horse Distillers Ltd. On and 1965 this took over also the remaining portions of the Ballindaloch estate. Later, the Cragganmore distillery went into the possession of Diageo plc.
